Operational Security

Everyone in the military community has head the words 'Operational Security' (OPSEC) and some actually have a good understanding of what it means. Far to many people don't understand it enough though and those people, through their ignorance, can put people at risk both at home and around the world. This page exists to raise 'Operational Security' awareness and hopefully offer people some information to think about.

The idea of OPSEC has been around for a very long time. Even during WWII we knew that the enemy wanted to know what we knew. Even back then the exploitation of information such as battle plans, equipment and troop placement, manufacturing, base locations, etc. was carried out on a regular basis. The poster below was actually used to make people aware of the importance of OPSEC.

Today the threat of information exploitation is bigger than ever. With the internet, cell phones, live television and global travel the passage of information virtually instantaneous. The threat is real and it doesn't just happen to someone else.

A great PowerPoint presentation was sent around the office the other day and really gave me a lot to think about. If you have not seen "Killing with Keyboards" please take a few minutes to watch it. The few minutes you take today can save lives.

Thanks to Ratheon and Boeing
for putting this together!

Another bit of information that all military personnel should be familiar with it CANFORGEN 038/08 which deals directly with Operational Security and the Canadian Forces. If any member of the CF is reading this sentence and has net read CANFORGEN 038/08 then I suggest you do it now. The copy linked to on this site is a quote of the message but should not be considered 'official'. Please access this message through the Defence Wide Area Network (DWAN) or through your local orderly room to verify its content or to see if it has been superseded.

It is our responsibility as Canadian citizens and for many of us, members of the CF, to ensure we are aware of the importance of Operational Security and to be vigilant in the protection of information that could be used against us. As the PowerPoint mentioned earlier clearly demonstrates, we do not know what our adversaries might be able to use against us.

If you ever ask yourself whether or not a topic should be discussed in any situation.. the answer must be NO. Our job isn't over when we leave the office so please do your part and think OPSEC 24/7. Your diligence and professionalism can save lives!
